Srila Prabhupada, born Abhay Charan De on September 1, 1896, in Kolkata, India, met his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, in 1922. Inspired by him, Prabhupada dedicated his life to serving Lord Krishna and sharing the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. After being named “Bhaktivedanta Swami,” he continued his mission to spread Krishna consciousness worldwide.
In 1965, at the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada journeyed to the United States with a mission to introduce the principles of Krishna consciousness to the Western world. With great determination and undying faith, he established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in New York City in 1966. What began as a small group of dedicated followers soon blossomed into a worldwide spiritual movement.
Srila Prabhupada’s teachings center on Bhakti Yoga, the path of devotion to the Supreme. He stressed the significance of chanting the Hare Krishna mantra for divine connection and spiritual enlightenment. His insightful commentaries on texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam offered practical guidance for a purposeful and balanced life.
Prabhupada’s teachings transcended geographical, cultural, and religious boundaries. He promoted “simple living and high thinking,” urging followers to live with integrity, compassion, and service to humanity. Through his lectures, books, and personal example, he inspired many to embrace Krishna consciousness and rediscover their spiritual essence.
Srila Prabhupada’s impact is vast, resulting in the establishment of over 100 temples, educational institutions, and farming communities worldwide. ISKCON centers, known as “Hare Krishna temples,” serve as hubs of spiritual practice, education, and community service, fostering peace and spiritual understanding.
His literary contributions are equally significant, with over 70 volumes of translations and commentaries, including the multi-volume “Srimad Bhagavatam.” These works continue to inspire truth-seekers and offer deep insights into the soul, self-realization, and spiritual awakening.
